Motes To End The Week

Hope she makes it: The crew of Hawaiian Adventures Kona was on a wildlife scouting trip off the Big Island coast on Dec. 9 when they encountered famous humpback whale BCX1232, named “Moon.” The mature female humpback whale has made headlines recently for her resilience in the face of insurmountable odds, completing a more than 4,000-mile migration with a severe spinal injury. Most scientists says she will die from the injuries, I hope she makes it.

GMAFB*: A woman in Norway is facing up to 3 years in prison on criminal hate speech charge after saying that a man cannot become a lesbian. Tonje Gjevjon, a lesbian filmmaker and actress, was informed on November 17 that she was under investigation for speaking out against prominent Norwegian activist Christine Jentoft on Facebook. Jentoft is a transgender female that often refers to herself as a lesbian mother. Three years in prison for expressing an unpopular opinion. Excuse me, isn’t Norway one of those countries the lft holds up as a beacon of sanity? Yeah, not so much.

Time to retire: A famous mountain lion known as the “Hollywood Cat” is being evaluated by wildlife officials after exhibiting signs of distress, including killing a leashed dog in a residential. P-22, as ecologists dubbed him, has made a name for himself in Los Angeles, where he’s been living in Griffith Park — home to the iconic Griffith Observatory and Hollywood Sign — since at least Feb. 2012. To me, that makes him pretty old even in cat years. Maybe they should find a decent habitat and let P-22 live out his years where he doesn’t have to worry where his next meal is coming from.

Lame duck decision: Out going Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, commuted all of the state’s death sentences ahead of leaving the office. Some of those commuted include a man who starved, burned, and tortured a 3-year-old girl, a man who stabbed a woman 42 times on a rural road after escaping from the Oregon State Penitentiary’s farm annex in 1984, a father and son who built a bomb and planted it at a bank, where it killed a bomb technician and a police captain in 2008, and a man who suffocated his wife and their three small children and stuffed their bodies in suitcases and sleeping bags before returning to work the next day and attending a pizza party in 2001. Now then people of Oregon will support these people until the end of their days. They all got that sentence for a reason.

Really: Yesterday I was in Wallyworld for some dog food. Right in front of me was a guy wearing a full tactical vest, with “plates” over his hoody. Now I’m no one to talk about paranoia, but in Wallworld? Really? In Hilo Hawaii? Really?
