Thursday Motes, Just Over The Hill From Friday

OMG, It’s the ‘rona: State-run television on last Wednesday announced the death of “Rebel Army combatant” Gilberto Antonio Cardero Sanchez. He is the sixth military official in Cuba to die since the peaceful protests that started on July 11. The announcement by MINFAR did not specify Sanchez’s rank and neither did it give a cause of death or his age.  The other five were generals. No cause of their deaths has been released either. Must be the ‘rona.

Good thoughts or prayers are asked: The woman who captured America’s heart with her powerful audition on AGT has left the competition. Jane Marczewski – who goes by the stage name Nightbirde – announced the news on Instagram early Monday morning. Nightbirde earned a Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell in an episode that aired several weeks ago after singing an original song titled It’s OK, which she said tells the story of her life for the last year while facing cancer. “Last time they checked, I had some cancer in my lungs, my spine and my liver,” she said at the audition. But she refused to let the illness define her. “Since my audition, my health has taken a turn for the worse and the fight with cancer is demanding all of my energy and attention.  I am so sad to announce that I won’t be able to continue forward on this season of AGT. Life doesn’t always give breaks to those that deserve it—but we knew that already.” This is a brave woman with a hard road ahead. I saw her audition and it was incredible. All good thoughts and prayers are asked for her. Thanks.

This is my shocked face: Nearly 90 percent of the 50,000 migrants released by the Biden administration have not yet reported to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement within the required 60-day window. at least 16,000 of those whose window of time has expired have disregarded the honor system and “not showed up.” I’m shocked I tell you, simply shocked.

It’s okay, they’re just Christians: At least 3,462 Christians were murdered by Islamists in Nigeria during the first 200 days of 2021, while some 3,000 Christians — many of them girls and young women — were kidnapped in the same period, Crux reported Thursday. This is just 68 deaths shy of the total number of murders of Nigerian Christians in 2020. The Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen are responsible for majority of the killings followed by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Muslim Fulani Bandits. It’s okay, they’re only Christians. They’ll turn the other cheek.

I’ll make an exception: For the first time since Riddick Bowe in 1988, an American boxer will fight for gold in Sunday’s featured final fight, the last of these Tokyo Olympics. Wednesday afternoon, Richard Torrez Jr. slammed his fist into the forehead of Kazakhstan’s Kamshybek Kunkabayev, pounding away 33 years of United States super heavyweight boxing irrelevance until finally the skin broke above Kunkabayev’s nose. A gash opened wide, and as blood began pouring in the third round, the referee waved her arms. Kunkabayev is 6-foot-3, a two-time silver medalist at the world championships who has started a professional career in which he’s 3-0, with three knockouts. Torrez did what they said, deflecting Kunkabayev’s punches then dropping his own left against Kunkabayev’s head. After the first couple shots, the fight never felt close. Looming on Sunday is Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov, the man who knocked Torrez unconscious in that 2019 world championship quarterfinal. Few will expect Torrez to win. I think I’ll watch this one if I can.

It’s not law: In a recent interview Senator Kevin Cramer(R-ND) praised the “Capital Police Officer” that shot and killed Ashli Babbitt. Cramer said Babbitt was “a criminal” who was shot for the crime of “not complying with officers”. He further claimed the officer was “protecting people” and he (Cramer) was “grateful” for the officer that shot Babbitt. Senator, what is the maximum penalty for “Not Complying With An Officers Instructions”?  In all the states I checked, it is a misdemeanor with a penalty of up to 1 year in jail, and a $5,000.00(max) fine. It is NOT a capital offense, punishable by death. Ashli Babbitt was unarmed, was not posing a physical threat, and yet was executed for the offence of “Not Complying.” And this shmuck is “grateful”? The killer has been named, and some sort of “investigation” has been conducted that said he did nothing wrong. I’m sure Ashli’s family and husband have some questions about that. We really can’t expect Senator Cramer to understand the finer points, he has a Masters in “Management”, not law.

Gunpowder Milkshake; A great beer and Cheetos afternoon movie. Fun.
