Thursday Motes With Feeling

Academy Awards: Didn’t watch ‘em. Don’t care.

Yes: I have seen the trailer to Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”. Yes, I will see it. I remember when West Side Story came out in the ‘60’s. After it came out, you needed at least 2 years of formal dance training just to join a street gang.

Ride “share”: (Manchester Evening News) A UK woman named has spoken out about her recent Uber trip in which the driver crashed into a canal in Salford, a trip the Silicon Valley ridesharing giant still charged her for. Lavelle was a passenger in the vehicle when the incident took place in Eccles in the early hours of the morning on April 11. After the accident received media attention, the Silicon Valley ridesharing giant later refunded the passenger who had to walk home from the accident scene through “not the nicest area.” I once caught a cab that didn’t even get out of the parking lot before the driver was stopped by a police officer. During the 23-minute citation I decided to get out and take another cab, the driver insisted I pay the “meter”. I kept walking, and the cop kept writing.

Response to a lawsuit: “Apple claims ‘no reasonable consumer would believe’ hitting ‘buy’ button means you forever own the digital content it sold you.” So, what they really mean is “rent”. This is one of the problems I have with streaming. If I “buy” the movie and then end my account with that service or the service goes out of business, I no longer have access to the movie I “bought”. If I like the movie, song, or book enough to “buy it”, I get a solid copy. That way I know it’s mine as long as I want it.

It’s not about the money: A legislative conference committee has approved an additional $2 million for a program aimed at catching motorists who run red lights at intersections. The DOT is choosing from 14 intersections, all in the downtown area, for the two-year pilot program to install red light enforcement cameras. It’s something several other cities have done. None in Hawaii. “So there’s no financial incentive whatsoever. It’s rather how you capture people who knowingly run red lights and provide a penalty to those so we have a safer traffic situation overall,”said Senate Transportation Committee Chair Chris Lee. “This is about having people think about going to intersections and stopping.” It’s for your own safety. Riiiggghhhttt.

Clear and transparent: White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Monday was asked why migrant children brought to US shelters are being given copies of Kamala Harris’ children’s book. Psaki retorted “I’d have to certainly check on that. I hear it’s a good book.”. White House Press Secretary  Jen Psaki shut down a reporter asking about the  leaked audio of John Kerry telling Iran’s foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif about Israel’s covert operations in Syria. Jen Psaki’s response; “We’re not going to comment on leaked tapes.” But Psaki did verify, well nothing.

No, I am not afraid of the bullet with my name on it, I’m concerned and worried about all those other bullets addressed “Occupant” or “to whom it may concern”.
